Coinbase's x402 Joins Linux Foundation, Backed by Google, Stripe, AWS
Coinbase announced that its agentic commerce protocol x402 has been contributed to the Linux Foundation with backing from a broad roster of companies including Google, Stripe, AWS and Cloudflare. Building x402 under the Foundation’s neutral governance is intended to accelerate developer adoption and foster interoperability across web2 and web3 payment systems, while positioning the protocol as an open standard for AI-enabled commerce.
Industry support from major cloud and payments players brings resources and credibility that could speed integration into merchant platforms and financial infrastructure. That said, adoption will hinge on implementation details, security audits and regulatory alignment; the Linux Foundation vehicle reduces vendor lock-in but doesn’t eliminate legal and policy hurdles. For now, the endorsement signals growing confidence in open, AI-driven payment stacks as a mainstream infrastructure direction.
