Google Warns Bitcoin Devs: Go Post‑Quantum by 2029
Google announced a corporate deadline to transition all authentication services to quantum‑resistant cryptography by 2029, effectively endorsing an eight‑year mitigation horizon that Ethereum has been advocating. The move reinforces industry expectations that major internet and cloud providers will harden key infrastructure well before fault lines appear, and it raises the bar for secure key management across the crypto ecosystem.
Bitcoin, however, has so far remained silent. Bitcoin’s elliptic‑curve signatures (ECDSA and Schnorr) would be vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum attackers, so the lack of a public roadmap increases pressure on node developers, exchanges and custodians to plan migrations or layered defenses. The next three years look likely to be a focal point for coordination between protocol teams, wallet providers and infrastructure operators as the community assesses upgrade paths and user migration strategies.
