ECB starts digital euro work on ATMs, payment terminals

Published at 2026-03-19 10:00:12

The European Central Bank has begun technical work to map how a digital euro would operate across existing ATMs and payment terminals, prioritizing offline transactions and interoperability with current payment infrastructures. The initiative assesses user flows, terminal firmware and backend integrations, and explores offline peer-to-peer and merchant payments to keep functionality when connectivity is limited.

This matters because offline capability could preserve everyday payments during network outages and extend services in low‑connectivity areas, supporting resilience and inclusion. Ensuring interoperability aims to minimize costly terminal upgrades and align banks, payment processors and retailers around common standards; the ECB says findings will inform pilots, consultations and design choices around privacy, security and adoption timelines.
