Sen. Blumenthal Seeks Binance Records Over Alleged $1.7B Iran Sanctions Breach

Published at 2026-02-26 22:15:17

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) opened a formal investigation through the Senate Homeland Security Committee after reporting that Binance allegedly enabled $1.7 billion in cryptocurrency transfers to Iranian entities with ties to terrorism. The committee is requesting internal records, transaction logs and communications to determine whether the exchange violated U.S. sanctions or counterterrorism laws.

Blumenthal’s inquiry is focusing in part on Binance’s operations and connections in Hong Kong, where the reporting suggests some of the transfers moved through. The probe highlights growing congressional scrutiny of major crypto platforms and could lead to fines, tougher compliance requirements or referrals for criminal enforcement — a development that may affect market access and due-diligence expectations for exchanges operating internationally.
