Texas Sues TP-Link, Alleges Devices Give Beijing Access to U.S. Consumers
Texas Attorney General's office filed a lawsuit against TP-Link Systems on Tuesday, alleging the company deceptively marketed routers and other networking equipment while enabling access by the Chinese government to U.S. consumers' devices. The complaint says TP-Link failed to disclose security and data-handling practices and alleges vulnerabilities or backdoors could allow foreign actors to surveil or control home and small-business networks. TP-Link has not issued a public response in the filing's immediate aftermath.
The case could trigger state procurement bans, contract cancellations, and heightened scrutiny of Chinese-made networking hardware — changes that matter for anyone relying on home devices for privacy, remote nodes, or peer-to-peer transactions. Beyond consumer impact, the lawsuit highlights broader supply-chain and firmware trust issues that may accelerate regulatory and vendor shifts in cybersecurity and consumer electronics markets.
