Canada Imposes $126 Million Fine on Cryptomus for Anti-Money Laundering Violations – cover image

On October 22, 2025, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) imposed a massive fine totaling C$176.96 million on Vancouver-based Xeltox Enterprises Ltd., the operator of the crypto platform Cryptomus. This hefty penalty came as a result of severe violations of anti-money laundering (AML) regulations uncovered during routine examinations.

FINTRAC revealed that Cryptomus failed to report 1,518 large transactions, each exceeding Canada’s C$10,000 reporting threshold. These transactions were linked to fraudulent schemes, sanctions evasion, and other illicit activities. Additionally, the company neglected to report over 7,500 transactions involving Iran, in direct violation of a Ministerial Directive aimed at restricting certain cross-border financial activities.

The regulatory body described these compliance failures as "severe" and "unacceptable," signaling that the enforcement is part of a broader message to crypto platforms about the critical importance of AML compliance.

For users and investors in the crypto space, this case highlights the growing scrutiny regulators are placing on cryptocurrency operators. Platforms that fail to meet compliance standards risk heavy penalties and reputational damage.
