Iran Weighs Accepting Crypto as Transit Fees for Oil Tankers

Published at 2026-04-08 13:30:32

According to the Financial Times, Iranian authorities are exploring plans to accept cryptocurrency and other digital payments as transit fees from fully loaded oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal would allow shippers to settle passage costs in digital assets instead of traditional banking channels, and is being framed as a modernization of payment options for one of the world’s busiest chokepoints.

If adopted, the policy could accelerate real-world use of crypto in large-scale energy commerce and create demand for robust on- and off‑ramp infrastructure, particularly stablecoin rails. At the same time, analysts and international stakeholders are likely to raise questions about sanctions compliance, anti‑money‑laundering controls and insurance implications for carriers operating in the region.
