BIS CBDC Architect Hyun Song Shin Nominated as Bank of Korea Governor

Hyun Song Shin, known for a 12-year tenure at the Bank for International Settlements where he influenced central bank approaches to central bank digital currencies, was nominated on March 22 by President Lee Jae-myung to serve as governor of the Bank of Korea. The nomination brings an international policy heavyweight to Seoul at a time when many central banks are moving from research to pilots and design choices for retail and wholesale CBDCs.

If confirmed, Shin's appointment could accelerate Korea’s CBDC roadmap and strengthen alignment with global standards on interoperability, privacy and financial stability. Markets, fintech firms and payment providers are likely to watch for shifts in testing priorities, technical design and regulatory engagement — moves that could shape how digital payments and tokenised assets evolve in South Korea and the region.
