Steak 'n Shake Expands to El Salvador, Accepting Bitcoin

Published at 2025-11-16 02:00:11

American chain Steak 'n Shake, which started accepting Bitcoin in May, announced new locations in El Salvador on Nov. 15, 2025. The openings place the brand in a market that adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, expanding options for both locals and tourists to pay with crypto at a familiar fast-food outlet.

The expansion is significant because it adds another mainstream merchant to El Salvador’s pro-Bitcoin ecosystem, reinforcing efforts to normalize everyday BTC payments beyond niche vendors. More physical outlets accepting Bitcoin can increase its utility and complement remittance and tourism flows, although the pace of local uptake will depend on payment infrastructure and consumer preference. Steak 'n Shake’s move highlights ongoing commercial experiments with crypto payments rather than an immediate widespread shift.
