Mercado Libre Shuts Down Mercado Coin and Halts Crypto Loyalty Program

Published at 2026-03-31 15:00:30

Mercado Libre announced that starting April 17 users will no longer be able to buy Mercado Coin, sell it through the platform, or earn cashback paid in the token. The company said customers may still sell or spend their existing Mercado Coin balance on the marketplace or opt to have balances converted into local currency, but new acquisitions and platform-based sales will be disabled after the cutoff.

The move effectively winds down Mercado Libre’s on-platform crypto loyalty feature and reduces the token’s utility inside the ecosystem. The company did not provide detailed reasons in the notice, leaving questions about whether regulatory, commercial or user-adoption issues prompted the change. Affected users should review their Mercado Coin balances and platform communications ahead of April 17 to decide whether to spend, sell, or convert their holdings.
