Ledger CTO: Bitcoin Safe from Quantum Computers for Now

Published at 2025-11-12 14:15:27

Charles Guillemet, chief technology officer at hardware wallet maker Ledger, told reporters that it is unlikely current or near-term quantum computers can crack Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections. He pointed to the enormous qubit counts and error-correction needs required to run Shor’s algorithm at scale, and noted that practical quantum attacks remain a technical and temporal challenge rather than an immediate vulnerability.

The comment matters because it tempers alarm while underscoring the need for continued work on migration paths and quantum-resistant algorithms. Wallet hygiene—avoiding address reuse and moving funds if new standards emerge—remains important. Industry research and standards bodies are already exploring post‑quantum signatures and contingency plans, so the community can prepare without panic while monitoring advances in quantum hardware.
