Gate wins Malta payments license to expand EU fiat and stablecoin rails
Gate has been granted a Malta payments license authorizing it to conduct payment transactions within the EU—explicitly enabling direct debits and credit transfers in line with PSD2 requirements. The approval gives Gate a regulatory foothold to route euro fiat flows and stablecoin settlements natively, rather than relying solely on third‑party payment processors. The license could speed on‑ and off‑ramps, improve settlement times and lower intermediary costs as Gate integrates its payments infrastructure, though commercial rollout and partner integrations remain to be announced. The move strengthens Gate’s compliance posture in Europe and may intensify competition among exchanges for merchant payments and regulated stablecoin services, while still requiring adherence to local AML/KYC and market rules.
