Buterin Says Ethereum Must Be Simplified to Achieve Trustlessness
In a Dec. 17, 2025 tweet, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin challenged prevailing ideas about blockchain “trustlessness,” arguing that true trustlessness is more attainable if the protocol itself is simplified. He suggested that complexity in protocol design creates hidden trust assumptions and larger attack surfaces, making decentralization harder to verify in practice.
The point matters because simplification can improve auditability, reduce client and validator fragmentation, and lower barriers for formal verification — all factors that strengthen security and decentralization. Developers, researchers and layer‑2 teams may need to reassess feature tradeoffs and design priorities. The comment has already prompted technical debate in community channels about which parts of the stack should be pared back versus delegated to off‑chain or higher‑layer solutions.
