Vitalik: Ethereum Smart Accounts Coming Within a Year

Published at 2026-03-01 03:00:07

On Feb 28, 2026, Vitalik Buterin said the rollout of smart accounts built on account abstraction is expected within a year, framing the change as part of making Ethereum closer to its cypherpunk roots. By pushing logic into user-controlled accounts rather than externally enforced contracts, Buterin argues the network can eliminate many intermediaries that currently complicate custody, transaction routing, and fee payment.

The shift matters because smart accounts can simplify wallet UX, enable gas sponsorship, social recovery and programmable authentication, and reduce reliance on custodial services and complex relayer systems. That could accelerate onboarding and reshape how developers build for DeFi and on‑chain apps, while also raising implementation and security trade-offs that wallets and protocols will need to address before broad adoption.
