Do Kwon Pleads Guilty to Fraud Charges in TerraUSD Collapse – cover image

Do Kwon, the founder of Terraform Labs, has pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges in a US court related to the collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin that wiped out about $40 billion in investor value. After being extradited from Montenegro in December, Kwon admitted to securities, wire, and commodities fraud, acknowledging his role in deceiving investors to artificially inflate the value of Terraform's crypto assets.

He agreed to forfeit over $19 million and could face up to 25 years in prison, though prosecutors have recommended a 12-year sentence. Judge Paul Engelmayer warned Kwon that the conviction could result in deportation and future travel restrictions since he is not a US citizen.

The TerraUSD crash in 2022 is credited with triggering the "crypto winter," causing widespread market downturns, including the collapse of major exchanges like FTX. Terraform Labs had already settled a $4.5 billion civil fraud case with the SEC earlier.

This case has drawn significant global attention, especially in South Korea where Terraform Labs was based, and highlights the risks involved in the cryptocurrency market.
