Tether Launches Scudo Unit for Fractional XAUT Payments

Published at 2026-01-06 18:30:49

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, Tether introduced Scudo, a unit of account for its gold-backed token XAUT designed to simplify fractional gold transactions as bullion reaches record levels. Scudo breaks XAUT into smaller denominations so users and merchants can transact in tokenized gold without dealing with high per-ounce pricing, responding to growing demand for digital gold alternatives.

The move could push XAUT beyond a pure hedge into a payments and remittance tool, potentially increasing liquidity and merchant acceptance. Market participants will watch adoption rates, new trading pairs, and disclosures around reserves; strong uptake may intensify competition in the tokenized-precious-metals space and change how investors use gold as both a store of value and a transactional asset.
