BitGo Integrates Lightning Network Into Qualified Custody for Faster Bitcoin Payments

Published at 2025-12-18 09:45:13

BitGo has integrated the Lightning Network into its qualified custody platform, enabling institutional clients to send and receive BTC payments with lower fees and near-instant settlement. The Lightning support is now available directly from BitGo's qualified custody service in New York, allowing firms to initiate off-chain Bitcoin payments while assets remain under regulated custody.

The move matters because it pairs a high-speed Layer 2 payment rail with a compliance-focused custody model, addressing a common barrier for institutions exploring Bitcoin payments and micropayments. By embedding Lightning inside a regulated custody setup, BitGo expects to reduce operational friction for treasury, trading and customer payout use cases and potentially accelerate institutional adoption of Bitcoin as a payment tool.
