Former UK National Crime Agency Officer Sentenced for Stealing 50 Bitcoin – cover image

Paul Chowles, a former intelligence officer with Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA), has been sentenced to 5.5 years in prison after stealing 50 bitcoin from Thomas White, who operated the infamous Silk Road 2.0 dark web marketplace. The theft took place during an investigation into White's illegal activities following his 2014 arrest.

Chowles accessed White's so-called "retirement wallet" and utilized a cryptocurrency mixing service known as Bitcoin Fog to obscure the origins of the stolen bitcoins. Although the bitcoin was valued around £60,000 at the time of the theft in 2017, its value skyrocketed to over £4 million by now.

Before being arrested in 2022, Chowles had managed to cash out approximately £145,000. The authorities initially believed that White himself had moved the bitcoin, but further investigations uncovered Chowles' involvement, leading to his dismissal from the NCA for gross misconduct.

Judge David Aubrey remarked on the seriousness of the crime and noted that substantial bitcoin funds worth nearly £470,000 were recovered from Chowles. The case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces with cryptocurrency-related crimes and the importance of robust security and transparency in crypto asset handling.
